Note:
In Vallauris, Théo Tobiasse (1927–2012) found greater creative freedom to enrich his poetic and narrative world. Following in the footsteps of 20th-century artists drawn to Provençal ceramics, he collaborated notably with the Atelier Madoura — famous for its work with Picasso — where he fashioned plates, dishes, vases and unique terracotta pieces. Tobiasse transposed the major themes of his painting onto the three-dimensional form of the clay: Jewish memory, exile, female figures and eroticism, accompanied by calligraphic inscriptions. He uses engobes, scraping techniques and vibrant polychromy to shape the material, playing with the reliefs and imperfections of the clay. His ceramic work is not merely a decorative medium, but a genuine sculptural extension of his quest for identity, in which terracotta becomes an emotionally charged vessel for his memories and personal mythology.
