Note:
Alfredo Pina (1887–1966) was a leading Franco-Italian sculptor of the early 20th century. Trained at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, where he won the prestigious National Grand Prix for Sculpture, he moved to Paris in the early 1910s. There he joined Auguste Rodin’s studio, becoming one of his most gifted pupils and practitioners, and was profoundly and enduringly influenced by Rodin’s style.
His work, characterised by powerful dramatic tension, vigorous modelling and the depiction of musculature in motion, explores bronze, marble and wax through expressive busts, mythological allegories and tormented figures. Also an engraver and medallist, he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salons as well as internationally (Venice, Rome, New York). Having become a naturalised French citizen in 1920, he later settled in Mesves-sur-Loire, in the Nièvre region, where he continued to produce more intimate works until his death. Today, his original castings are particularly sought after by collectors of post-Rodin sculpture.
