Description
An Antique mantel clock, 'La Renommée', Faisant à Paris, ormolu bronze, Empire period, Napoleon I, France, early 19th century. Fire-gilded bronze. Mantel clock or pendulum clock. Decorated with laurel wreaths, female heads (espagnolettes), rosettes, columns featuring palmette moldings and capitals, and openwork drapery. Finished with a frieze with two female figures or nymphs holding a chalumeau or shawm, a palm branch, and a laurel branch, representing an allegory of fame and renown ('La Renommée'). Movement with silk rope suspension (probably renewed later). Dial marked 'Faisant à Paris'. Including the winding key. Empire style and period. France, early 19th century. The clockmaker Faisant was active on Rue Saint-Denis in Paris in 1806. He was active during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. According to Tardy, the name 'Faisant' appears on the dials of a lyre clock and a longcase regulator clock (Tardy, Dictionnaire des horlogers français, Paris, 1971, p. 220) and should be cited in historical documents, such as the inventory of Marshal Michel Ney’s estate from December 1815.  Literature: Pierre Kjellberg, Encyclopédie de La Pendule Française, Les Editions de l'Amateur, 1997, pg. 384-385, for similar clocks from Faisant à Paris. (25 x 47 x 15 cm) Condition Report: We do not guarantee the working condition of the clocks and/or watches, and they have not been tested. For long-term accuracy, we recommend a full overhaul by a professional watchmaker.
