History
This marine, pierced by the incandescent light of a fading sun, bears witness to Ivan Avazovsky's immense influence on several generations of 19th-century Russian painters. Here, the anonymous artist takes up some of the Theodosia master's codes, notably the vast sky, the dramatic contrast between light and shadow, and the presence of a ship isolated against the immensity, but offers a more restrained, almost meditative interpretation.
Far from the heroic storms and spectacular effects dear to Aïvazovski, this composition emphasises the stillness of the evening and the density of the atmosphere. It reflects the tradition of Russian marine painting, which, while inheriting Romanticism, is gradually moving towards a more realistic and contemplative sensibility.
