Description
Emmanuel Yakovlevitch MAGDESYAN (Armyansk, 1857 - Simferopol, 1906) Sailing boat in front of the Ayou-Dag in Crimea Oil on canvas, monogrammed lower right in Cyrillic. In its original frame with cartouche. H. 20 x W. 14.5 cm. History Emmanuel Magdesian was a marine painter of Armenian origin, born into a modest family in the Crimea. Educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in St Petersburg, where he won silver medals, he became a close pupil of the great master Ivan Aïvazovski, whose influence had a profound effect on his work. After moving to the Crimea, particularly Simferopol, he devoted his career to painting the sea, developing a personal language in the tradition of the great Russian Marinists. He also founded a gallery open to the public, one of the first in the city. Much of his work disappeared during the Second World War, contributing to the scarcity of his paintings today, which are often kept in private collections.
