History
Painted in 1923, this landscape belongs to the period of exile of Ivan Choultsé, who left Russia after the 1917 Revolution to settle permanently in Western Europe. Trained in the imperial academic tradition, the artist remained faithful to naturalist painting, favouring the effects of light and a calm vision of the world, in contrast to the avant-gardes that dominated the artistic scene at the time.
The composition shows a vast golden field animated by light, bordered by trees with dense foliage that structure the space. The sky, punctuated by light clouds, diffuses a soft clarity that envelops the whole. Choultsé's soft brushstrokes and warm palette convey a serene, almost suspended atmosphere, in which nature seems idealised.
The exact location has not been identified, but the landscape could evoke the Swiss countryside that the artist frequented in the 1920s, certain French regions, or motifs recomposed from memories of his native land. In this way, this work bears witness to the way in which Choultsé, in exile, pursued a style of painting based on memory as much as observation, in which light becomes the vehicle for a discreet nostalgia and a lasting attachment to nature.
