History
Alfred Savoir's historical play "La Petite Catherine", first performed at the Théâtre Antoine in Paris on 2 October 1930, traces the early years of Catherine II of Russia, still a foreign princess in the making. Savoir's lively, elegant writing offers a nuanced reading of the character, combining theatrical lightness and psychological finesse, in the tradition of a theatre of manners nourished by history, for which Natalia Goncharova designed a whole series of costumes.
Warmly received by Parisian audiences, the play won them over with its balance between historical reconstruction and dramatic accessibility. This success soon spread beyond France's borders, with "La Petite Catherine" soon touring England, Germany and Belgium, testifying to the enduring appeal of the great imperial figures and the active circulation of the European theatrical repertoire between the wars.
