Description
Alexandre Nikolaïevitch BENOIS (Saint Petersburg, 1870 - Paris, 1960) Set design for "Le pavillon d'Armide" (Armide's pavilion) Watercolour and ink on paper, signed lower left in graphite "Alexandre Benois" and annotated on the back "Ariane pour Ida / 1ere idée". On the back are labels from galleries in Basel and Cologne. Framed. H. 16 x W. 23 cm. History The annotation on the back of the work "Pour Ida" in the artist's hand most probably refers to Ida Rubinstein (1883-1960). Alexandre Benois and Ida Rubinstein were closely linked through their involvement in the Ballets Russes, where they contributed to a profound renewal of stage aesthetics in the early 20th century.
