History
In the 1960s and 1970s, the Iron Curtain began to crack, slowly, with a tension that was still perceptible. Artists were among the first to capture these tiny shifts, this fragile opening up of the field of possibilities.
In this respect, the 1956 exhibition devoted to Pablo Picasso at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow was a decisive moment in Boris Zaborov's career. It was a lasting revelation. From then on, Picasso's work became for him the embodiment of absolute creative achievement, a yardstick by which to measure the artist's freedom.
Boris Zaborov's Self-portrait, painted in 1963, can thus be read as a form of homage, almost a declaration addressed to this tutelary genius.
