History
In 1832, at the request of the Marshal's Office of the Winter Palace, a table and dessert service for 150 guests, decorated with neo-Gothic motifs, was designed and presented to Emperor Nicholas I for Christmas 1833. The Gothic service takes its name from the fact that its decorative motif borrows elements from medieval stained-glass windows, thus reappropriating Old Russian motifs. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the collection was regularly supplemented with pieces from the Imperial Porcelain Factory and the Kornilov brothers' factory in St Petersburg. At the end of the 19th century, the service was extended to seat up to 200 people. Up until the reign of Tsar Nicholas II, the Gothic service was completed and used as a symbol of Russian style, notably at the famous masked ball in 1903, organised in honour of the 290th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty.
