Mark in black on the inside of the neck with the czar's figure. H. 44 x L. 19 cm. History During the reign of Nicholas I, Emperor of Russia from 1825 to 1855, the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory of St Petersburg enjoyed one of its most brilliant periods. Founded in the XVIIIᵉ century under Elisabeth Petrovna, it became a veritable court language, serving dynastic prestige and the representation of imperial power. The porcelain produced under Nicholas I was characterised by a sophisticated aesthetic, both monumental and precious, inherited from Neoclassicism and nourished by the Romantic sensibility of the XIXᵉ century. The large ceremonial vases often combine deep blue backgrounds, chiselled gilding and reserves painted like miniature paintings. Landscapes, architectural views or idealised scenes take their place in a decor of great ornamental richness. This type of vase is a perfect illustration of the Imperial Manufactory's ambition to elevate porcelain to the rank of a major art form, somewhere between painting, sculpture and goldsmithing. Under Nicholas I, porcelain became one of the most refined expressions of Russian aristocratic taste.
