We would like to thank Mr Benjamin Richer for providing us with the date of creation of this work. He is currently preparing a monograph on the artist. History After settling in Paris in the 1920s, Séraphin Soudbinine developed a highly original ceramic body of work in France, at the crossroads of the sculptural tradition and the decorative research of his time. Trained in Parisian artistic circles, he frequented workshops associated with the Manufacture de Sèvres and worked alongside ceramists such as Emmanuel Decoeur and Delachenal, whose teaching had a profound influence on his practice. It was during this period in France that Soudbinine turned to ceramics, which he saw as a veritable field for experimentation. Fascinated by the arts of the Far East, he drew inspiration from Chinese celadons and Japanese glazes, developing glazes with deep, changing tones, often resembling mineral matter. "The Baptism of Christ" bears witness to this synthesis. The frontal treatment and stylisation of the forms are reminiscent of the old Russian icons in bronze, whose structure and spirit he seems to have transposed into the language of ceramics. The green glaze, with shades reminiscent of jade, unifies the volumes and gives the scene a dimension that is both decorative and meditative, characteristic of his research in the 1920s and 1930s. This work thus appears to be a meeting point for the artist's various influences: his Russian heritage, his Parisian training and his fascination with the Far East.
