H. 25.8 x W. 20 cm History A collection of photographic reproductions of samples of Russian embroidery produced in Smolensk under the direction of Princess Maria Klavdievna Tenicheva, known as Marie Ténichev (Saint Petersburg, 1858 - Paris, 1928), herself an artist, collector and patron of the arts, who was close to Savva Mamontov, Alexandre Benois and Serge de Diaghilev. In 1893, she opened an arts and crafts school on her estate at Talachkino, near Smolensk, designed to showcase Russian folk art. Many artists visited the school, where peasants produced ceramics, cabinet-making and enamelling. Marie Ténichev also opened a dyeing workshop there, where the peasant women probably produced the paintings featured in the collection. At the end of the 19th century, due to the high cost of industrially dyed yarns, many peasant fabrics in the Smolensk region remained white and the tradition of traditional coloured embroidery was tending to disappear. Princess Maria Ténicheva set about reviving the old vegetable dyeing techniques in Talachkino, creating a specialist workshop that contributed to the renaissance of traditional Russian embroidery, famous for the richness and brilliance of its colours. The paintings in this collection were produced by peasant women who came to Talachkino in search of work. They are unique pieces, with designs and motifs invented by these women and featuring original themes.
