Description
Large neo-Gothic-style bowl in chiselled and gilded bronze, decorated with foliage and palmettes, resting on an openwork tripod base. The interior is made of metal, enamelled blue on the outside.
Placide Poussielgue-Rusand’s workshop, second half of the 19th century, gilded bronze
This flower basket, produced by Placide Poussielgue-Rusand’s workshop, perfectly illustrates the Neo-Gothic style then in vogue in the decorative arts and liturgical furnishings. Based on candlestick base no. 545 and basket no. 2142 from the firm’s catalogue, it exemplifies the principle of modular composition developed by the workshop, which allowed different decorative elements to be combined to create refined and varied ornamental objects.
The openwork bowl has a flared shape resting on an elegant central pedestal. Its decoration consists of a network of trefoil arcades and flamboyant motifs inspired by medieval Gothic architecture. The upper border unfolds into a spectacular crown of cut-out fleurons, evoking the crests of a reliquary or an altar finial. The openwork reveals a deep blue background.
The intricately crafted tripod base features a floral design of vine shoots, bunches of grapes and stylised foliage – motifs frequently used in religious ornamentation for their Eucharistic symbolism.
