Provenance: former collection of Pierre Landrieu, former chairman of the Festival Committee. Whilst there has been a strong tradition of popular festivals in Bayonne since the late 19th century, centred on a wide variety of events (balls, float parades, elegance contests, horse races, cavalcades and bull runs), the dynamic Festival Committee, established in the 1920s, secured the creation of the Bayonne Festival in 1932. It was not until the post-war period that these now-traditional festivities became firmly established, first as the counterpart to the Pamplona festivities and then as the largest popular event in France.
