We would like to thank Alexandre OCANA, the artist’s nephew, for the information he has provided.
Modesto Sánchez Hernández was born in Madrid and adopted the surname Cadenas in honour of his maternal grandmother. A contemporary of José Vela Zanetti, the Spanish representative of Mexican muralism, the artist must necessarily be understood within a political context. A precocious artist, he held his first exhibitions as early as 1924.
The subjects he favoured were mostly working-class themes, in which he tended to depict simple gestures from everyday rural life.
Prior to these exhibitions, the artist had been living in Hendaye since 1923, where he worked with the Mauméjean brothers as a painter and cartoonist. It was there that he met his wife, Margarita Vergés Laborde, a native of the town.
In this 1929 work, set in Hendaye, one can imagine that the houses depicted are near Txingudi Bay, known for its jetties used to moor the ‘lanchas’, fishing boats used in everyday life.
A staunch opponent of Franco’s dictatorship, he subsequently moved to Portugal before returning to Spain. His opposition to Franco’s regime proved to be his undoing: he was shot in 1936 in León.
