Description
Paul BAZE (1901–1985)
Spanish Dancer in a Tavern
Oil on canvas, signed top left and dated 1949
98 x 195 cm
With this truly spectacular work, the winner of the 1928 Grand Prix de Rome and future curator of the Musée Bonnat presents us with the sight of a Spanish dancer—a subject he captures with his characteristic flair—in a sultry atmosphere where one can almost hear the clamour of the tavern. This is a panoramic painting in which a series of small scenes unfold within a bold composition that heightens the frenzied atmosphere of the moment depicted, and where the viewer stands spellbound by the energy of a wild evening of flamenco.
