Description
[ASIA] TIBET, 18th century
Thangka in tempera on canvas, the composition centred on a Buddhist master depicted seated on a richly decorated throne within a paradisiacal garden. Dressed in monastic robes, he holds a manuscript in his right hand and a bowl in his left. His face, with its expressive features, is framed by a circular nimbus. At his feet are two disciples seated in meditation or study, accompanied by young acolytes. Several Buddhas sit in the clouds in the upper register, while the background features an idealised landscape of pavilions, flowering trees, rock gardens and water features.
