[ASIA] TIBET, 18th century
Thangka in tempera on canvas. The composition is organised around Tsongkhapa, depicted seated in padmasana on a richly decorated lotiform throne, his hands performing the gesture of teaching. He is dressed in the monastic robes characteristic of the Gelugpa school and wearing the traditional yellow cap. Around the main figure is a large group of lineage masters, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas represented in cloudy mandorles. The upper section features several meditating figures seated on lotuses in a celestial landscape. The lower part features various wrathful deities and Dharma protectors surrounded by flames.
