Description
* KAIRIRU ISLANDS, EASTERN SEPIK, PAPUA NEW GUINEA.
Hardwood pestle, carved with a standing male figure, separated from the shaft and handle by a cylindrical base into which the feet disappear. The elbows are off the body and the hands are on the hips. The face has large eyes underlined by a small throat forming a mask and overlooking a powerful nose with a reperforated spectrum. The lower part of the face has a small mouth and a pointed chin. The top of the head supports an opposum. The superb shiny red-brown patina bears witness to its long use and age. Late 19th - early 20th century.
Plinth.
H. 51.5 cm - Diam. 7.2cm
Provenance: Ulrich Kortmann (Dormund, Germany)
