Description
¤ DOGON, MALI Standing statue of an ancestor or mythical being made of hardwood (acacia) with a thick crusty and cracked patina following numerous ritual offerings (libélé, millet porridge and various). The ovoid head, with no facial features, alludes to the blossoming of speech orchestrated by the God Amma. It is supported by a long neck, with two rings, which rests on pectoral muscles forming a circular plateau from which hang the two arms, which rest on the thighs, and the torso, which is slightly arched at the front. Like the head, these anatomical parts are entirely scarified, including the back. At the bottom, the two legs are slightly bent and the feet rest on a small circular base. Late 19th - early 20th century H. 57.5 cm Provenance: Private collection
