Description
Reliquary figure. The concave face with half-moon-shaped eyes is divided in the middle by a vertical ridge in relief. The mouth is not depicted. A transverse crescent dominates the oval face, framed by large ears adorned with cylindrical pendants. The entire wooden sculpture is plated with brass leaves decorated with geometric motifs, and the face is finely worked with narrow copper strips laid parallel. Under the eyes is a rare and subtle decoration of interlaced copper strips. Half of the front of the diamond-shaped base is covered with stapled brass leaves. The back of the exposed wood sculpture is decorated with a vertical relief. This carefully crafted antique sculpture exudes balance. Kota. Gabon. Late 19th century - early 20th century. Height 53 Width 25 cm Provenance : Doctor Lacroix, medical assistant to the colonial troops around 1905 in French Equatorial Africa.
