Description
CHINA, Ming dynasty, 16th-17th century. Rare and large sculpture of Buddha Bhaisajyaguru (Medicine Buddha), in chased and gilded bronze. He is depicted with his eyes almost closed. He is wearing the monastic habit, his chest uncovered and adorned with a swastika. He is holding the myrobolan fruit in his right hand in varada mudra (offering gesture), his left hand in dhyana mudra (meditation gesture). H_51 cm W_39 cm (sculpture). H_14 cm W_44.5 cm (with base) The carved wooden base (later). Provenance: French private collection, inherited from an expatriate who lived in Vietnam between 1930 and 1950. References - a sculpture of similar size and iconography, Christie's Paris sale, 16 December 2022, of a Buddhist triad, lot no. 91. - for a sculpture of similar iconography in patinated bronze, Sotheby's New York sale, 11 September 2012, lot no. 181.
