Description
SET OF THREE OBJECTS
comprising:
- a paulownia wood box, in the shape of a ‘karabitsu’, decorated with a Noh theatre theme featuring masks and musical instruments in gold and polychrome takamaki-e lacquer, with six legs rising up the sides; the interior finished in nashiji lacquer (one leg requires re-gluing; minor imperfections and wear; slight warping of the lid);
- a ‘nagae-chôshi’-style ritual sake jug, a vessel with two spouts and a long horizontal handle, made of brown-lacquered wood with ‘mokume’-style decoration imitating wood grain, the interior lacquered red
(Signs of wear, damage to the end of the handle);
- a circular ‘tabako-bon’, made of paulownia wood with gold-lacquered floral decoration, featuring a copper container forming the ‘hi-hire’, a small brazier to keep the ‘kiseru’ (pipe) alight, and a metal-rimmed opening, which presumably held a container for the ashes; with a double handle
(Minor gaps in the decoration).
