Description
GREAT KORAN Mecca, Hejaz, dated AH 1075 or AH 1175/1664-65 or 1761-62 Arabic manuscript on oriental laid paper, 31 leaves and a flyleaf, 41 lines of small black naskh per page, verses marked with gold roundels, titles of suras 1 and 2 (the Fatiha and The Cow) in white on a gold background, other sura titles in red thuluth in a blue cartouche, blue jadwal, section markers in red thuluth in blue medallions, first folio decorated with an illuminated cartouche, colophon giving the place of copying as Mecca by order of the Commander of the Faithful (amir al-mu'minin) 'Uthman in 1175 AH / 1761-62 (or 1075 AH / 1664-65), in its very fine original brown morocco flap binding with stamped and gilt decoration. Slight wetness in the upper margin. Slight tears and folds in places, minor old repairs. Binding weakened, particularly the front cover. Size: 36,2 x 23,1 cm (folio), 29,1 x 18 cm (text.) This large Qur'an has the rare feature of being divided into thirty sections (juz'), each occupying a double page. The colophon indicates that the manuscript was produced in Mecca for a certain Uthman, Commander of the Faithful (amir al-mu'minin.) However, the date indicated in the colophon is unclear, reading either (1)175 or 1(0)75 of the Hegira (1761-62 or 1664-65.) The title of Commander of the Faithful (amir al-mu'minin) is not known.) The title of Commander of the Faithful was held by most of the rulers and leaders of the Muslim community, beginning with Umar, the first caliph and successor of the Prophet Muhammad. The Umayyad, Abbasid and Fatimid caliphs, as well as the Ottoman and Moroccan sultans, all bore this title, as did the imams of the Ismaili community. Although it is difficult to identify this Uthman precisely, it is certain that this manuscript was a luxurious commission for an important figure in Mecca.
