Description
TWO APOTHECARY LABELS
Venice, 18th century
Printed, hand-painted colours, the Virgin and Child between two winged lions, text in Ottoman Turkish on either side indicating an ointment (ma'jun), each image framed.
Size: 7 x 10 cm (each when viewed.)
These are labels for ointments or salves produced for a pharmacy in Venice (spezieria "Alla Madonna"), presumably one of the many pharmacies whose products were destined for the Ottoman Empire. An identical example is in the Wellcome Trust in London (inv. 30732i.)
