Vietnam, late 19th - early 20th century
Map of the three northern mountainous regions of Vietnam, the former Tuyên Quang, Thái Nguyên and Hung Hóa, referred to as Tam Tuyên on the map. These provinces were designated as such in the 19th century.
The region was particularly strategic and of significant military importance, forming a transition zone on the border with China. This map probably dates from the period of the Taiping Revolt, when the last of the rebels took refuge in the season. The strategic points are inscribed in Chinese, Nôm and Qu?c ng? a romanised version of Vietnamese.
