Description
A bottle of 1924 Romanée-Conti Monopole, Villaine & Chambon. In its original condition, in a period wicker basket.
Provenance: Artigny Garden Party Auction, 26 May 2024, lot no. 97, described as “from the estate of Charles Brault (1897–1959), a wine connoisseur, part of whose cellar was purchased by La Tour d’Argent following his death.”
“This bottle recalls the illustrious history of the Domaine de La Romanée-Conti, whose name derives from the king’s cousin, Louis François de Bourbon, Prince of Conti, who became its owner in 1760. The label on this 1924 bottle bears the name of Jacques Duvault-Blochet, who purchased the estate on the eve of his 80th birthday in 1869, together with two of his grandchildren representing the Villaine and Chambon families, under whose surnames it is stated that they are “sole owners”.
“The 1924 vintage in Burgundy saw the start of bottling at the château, spearheaded by Philippe de Rothschild. Spring and early summer were very favourable for the vines; flowering took place in superb weather, and the early growth meant the grapes were able to withstand less favourable weather conditions without damage and reach satisfactory ripeness. A late harvest produced wines with good alcohol content, refined and full-bodied, but low in tannins. ‘A good year’, notes Idealwine.” “Across the world, 1924 was the year the Michelin Guide began considering the awarding of culinary stars, a process that would commence two years later; the year of the first Winter Olympics in Chamonix; the year of Lenin’s death and Aznavour’s birth. As an aside, it was also the year in which the women’s world record for loop-the-loops was broken by Adrienne Bolland, who performed 212 loops in 72 minutes at Orly. It’s a safe bet that this feat was celebrated with a bottle of Romanée-Conti!”
