Jacques Laffitte (1767-1744), of modest origins, entered the world of banking at the end of the reign of Louis XVI. He enjoyed a meteoric rise to the position of Governor of the Banque de France. He amassed a considerable personal fortune, which was nevertheless disrupted at the end of his career by a number of setbacks. He had to sell, but kept the prestigious set of chairs we are presenting, installed in the grand salon overlooking the garden of his Parisian hotel, the Hôtel Laffitte.
