Description
DELAVAN René (1896–1958) – A solid silver necklace comprising a pendant depicting a stylised tribal-inspired symbol, mounted on its original chain. Silversmith’s hallmark, hallmark of guarantee and ‘DELAVAN’ mark. Circa 1940. Height of pendant: 6.5 cm. Length of chain: 48 cm. Weight: 22.80 g. Note: Although less well-documented today, René Delavan is primarily associated with artistic pewter work, Art Deco copperware and the creation of silver jewellery. Active between 1926 and 1958, his workshop played a part in the revival of French hammered pewter during the interwar period, against a backdrop shaped by the decorative experiments of designers such as Jean Després, Maurice Daurat and Christian Fjerdingstad. His pieces are characterised by understated, modernist forms, often embellished with guilloché, fluted or dotted patterns. He is notably mentioned in the book *La Dinanderie française 1900–1950*.
