Description
BRISDOUX Lucien (1878–1963) – A stoneware bowl on a foot, partially glazed in green and featuring extensive gilded highlights. Circa 1930. Unsigned by the artist, but bears the mark ‘Mignon-Massart Nantes’, a prestigious 20th-century gallery in Nantes through which the object was sold. Diameter: 5.5 cm. Note: The Mignon-Massart gallery, one of the most important art galleries in Nantes during the 20th century, which grew out of a 19th-century framing workshop, established itself over time as a major venue for the promotion of modern and contemporary art. From 1934 until its permanent closure in 1988, it exhibited both regional artists and major figures such as Marc Chagall, Georges Rouault, André Dunoyer de Segonzac, Maurice de Vlaminck, Maurice Utrillo and, after the war, Raoul Dufy, Georges Braque, André Derain, Pierre Bonnard, Albert Marquet, Jean Bazaine and Alfred Manessier. Destroyed during the bombing of 1943 and subsequently rebuilt, it remains today a major landmark in the history of art in Nantes.
