Description
ROBERT de VAUGONDY (Gilles). The Duchy of Savoy, comprising the Chablais, the Fossigny, the Génevois, Savoy proper, the Tarentaise and the Maurienne. 1751. Two sheets joined together, with a central fold for the copperplate map engraved in black and enhanced with colour. Scale. (Adhesive tape along the edges, small losses and stains in the margins) Outside margins: 49.5 x 53.5 cm Gilles and his son Didier ROBERT DE VAUGONDY, geographers to the King, were descended from a line of cartographers whose career began in the early 17th century and remained active until the late 18th century. Their work is on a par with that of their illustrious ancestor Nicolas Sanson d’Abbeville, who had revolutionised French cartography as early as the first half of the 17th century. This map was drawn up based on Giovanni Tommaso Borgonio’s map of Piedmont; in the 17th century, Borgonio was the pre-eminent Piedmontese illustrator of Savoy, where he stayed between 1672 and 1675. It is of particular interest for its detailed depiction of the Aosta Valley.
