Ovoid vase, c. 1900
Ovoid porcelain vase with a brown speckled enamelled decoration on a celadon blue ground.
Hard body known as ‘Pâte nouvelle’.
Marked with an ‘S’ and dated 1900 within a crossed-out triangle beneath the base.
Potter’s mark, mould number in low relief and clay type designation ‘JP 04-3 PN’ beneath the base.
H.: 15 cm
(cracks, chips).
Provenance: Private collection, Marseille.
Invented in 1882 by the Sèvres Manufactory, the ‘Pâte nouvelle’ exemplifies the turning point in the French arts at the end of the 19th century. The vibrant colours of enamels from China and Japan could not, in fact, be applied to the traditional hard paste; the composition, almost exactly matching that of Chinese porcelain, was therefore adopted, whilst the arts embraced Japonism. The vase presented here illustrates this exploration, which was both technical and stylistic.
