Large bronze ceremonial drum
A large temple drum in green patina bronze, slightly arched in shape, richly decorated with openwork side grips and engraved decorative friezes. The body bears an inscription in Japanese characters with a date corresponding to the 8th day of the 5th month of the 9th year of the Enpō era (1681). This type of drum, intended for ritual or ceremonial use in Buddhist temples, was used to beat the rhythm of religious services and monastic announcements. Resting on a bronze base with feet. The gong cover is missing.
