The Miyao workshops in Yokohama, under the direction of their founder Miyao Eisuke, were among the most important of the Meiji period in the field of medium- to large-scale ornamental sculptures in patinated and gilded bronze. The works most often featured characters taken from the corpus of traditional Japanese myths and legends, appealing both to the Japanese market and to a Western clientele in search of quality and originality. Miyao Eisuke's works were presented on several occasions at the Universal Exhibitions of the time, as universal testimony to the high level of sophistication of Japanese art.
