JAPAN, 19th century Writing box, suzuribako Of quadrangular form, in ro-iro lacquer with an elegant hira maki-e gold and nashiji decoration of two kadomatsu, a composition of pine and bamboo branches, holding a curtain rolled up with shimekazari, a decoration referring to Japanese New Year celebrations. The inside of the lid features fine gold and silver lacquer decoration on a nashiji background of various objects from Japanese culture, a fan (ogi), balls (temori), a game wheel (hanetsuki), etc. The interior includes a metal water bucket and various compartments. 4.3 x 21.6 x 23.6 cm (One chip, small crack on one corner of the lid) H: 4.3 x W: 21.6 x D: 23.6 cm
