Description
JAPAN, 18th century Six-leaf folding screen, Komai Genki (1747-1797) Each leaf consisting of a vertical painting, in ink and colours on paper, depicting Chinese children engaged in various outdoor activities during the cherry blossom period, known as "Hanami". Signed "源琦" and stamped lower left. Circa 1780. Height : 173 cm Length : 364 cm Provenance: bought by the current owner's parents in Tokyo between 1995 and 1998. Passed on by descent. A Japanese painter from the late Edo period, Komai Genki was a pupil of Maruyama Okyo. Working in Kyoto, he distinguished himself by adapting themes and legends, particularly Chinese ones, which he interpreted with a decorative sensitivity and finesse of execution typical of the Maruyama-Shijo school. His works, combining precision of drawing and elegance of composition, embody the cultural openness of 18th-century Japan and the naturalist movement in painting.
