A Japanese painter from the late Edo period, Komai Genki was a pupil of Maruyama Okyo. Working in Kyoto, he distinguished himself by adapting themes and legends, particularly Chinese ones, which he interpreted with a decorative sensitivity and finesse of execution typical of the Maruyama-Shijo school. His works, combining precision of drawing and elegance of composition, embody the cultural openness of 18th-century Japan and the naturalist movement in painting.
