Description
CHARLES FOUQUERAY (1869-1956) "The workshop at the temple Watercolour stencil on engraved lines on paper Signed lower right 27 x 33 cm Charles Fouqueray played an important role in shedding light on Indochina through his artistic work. Although his early works focused on historical and genre painting, he is best known for his Orientalist style, which took off during his travels in the French colonies, including Vietnam. In 1914, he was awarded the Prix de l'Indochine for his artistic contributions to the colonial territories. However, because of the First World War, Fouqueray was unable to leave for Indochina until after 1921. His visits to Asia, particularly Vietnam, had a considerable influence on his work. He drew inspiration from landscapes, scenes of local life and traditions to create works that reflected a romantic and picturesque vision of the region. These works helped to fuel France's interest in the Orient at the time. His depictions of Indochina, imbued with ethnographic detail and a vibrant palette, reveal Fouqueray's admiration and fascination for Vietnamese culture and its people.
