Background: Otto Herbert Hajek (1927–2005)
A leading figure in post-war German art, Otto Herbert Hajek established himself as one of the principal exponents of European geometric abstraction. A sculptor, painter and graphic artist, from the 1960s onwards he developed a visual language based on simple forms, architectural structures and the use of bold colours, often inspired by primary colours. Having taken part in several editions of Documenta in Kassel, he gained international renown through his monumental works integrated into public spaces and his innovative exploration of the relationship between art, architecture and urban planning.
The work on display fully reflects his unique visual universe, where geometric rigour is combined with great chromatic power. Even in a more intimate format, it retains all the modernity and visual power that made Hajek one of the key figures of European abstraction in the second half of the 20th century.
