Description
CESAR (1921–1998)
‘Enveloppage’ 1971
Old coffee grinder (wood, metal and paper) encased in thermoformed Plexiglas
Trace of a signature (paper partially torn), located in Nice and dated 13 April 1971
45 x 39 x 25 cm
Provenance: Gifted by the artist to the owner
The ‘Enveloppages’ series, little-known works of an experimental nature, followed on from the ‘Transparent Compressions’ of the 1970s.
In the ‘Enveloppages’, César employs this process by inserting objects into the works.
A typewriter, a telephone, a pair of shoes, a coffee grinder, tools, a fan,
All these vintage objects, taken from everyday life or from the second-hand markets the artist enjoys visiting, appear, like reliquaries, encased in one or more sheets of plastic.
They are small in size yet of great quality
(torn paper, yellowed Plexiglas, signs of ageing)
Decorative. The breadth of the folds and creases in the sheet of Plexiglas magnifies
their presence.
For quite some time, César regarded this type of work as ‘experiments or
sometimes even as mere attempts at paths (which he had] not taken’,
but today they have found their rightful place.
