Description
HAMILTON Richard (1922-2011)
Hugh Gaitskell as a Famous Monster of Filmland.
Photolithograph signed by the artist and numbered 79/100.
Framed. 37.5 x 36.5 cm
Note :
British artist Richard Hamilton can be considered the father of Pop Art with his iconic 1956 work "Just what is it that makes today's home so different, so appealing?" (held at the Kunsthalle, Tübingen).
Our lot is taken from the "Collected Words: de luxe portfolio" published in 1982 by Waddington Graphics in London, a copy of which is held by WOAgri (inventory no. 19.2016.1). Here he takes up the satirical portrait of the politician Hugh Gaitskell (1906-1963) that he painted in 1964 (Arts Council Collection, London - no. AC 724). In this portrait, he superimposed a newspaper photograph of the politician on a cover of the horror film magazine Famous Monsters of Filmland, featuring the actor Claude Rains in the film The Phantom of the Opera. The artist considered Gaitskell to be a political monster; he was leader of the British Labour Party from 1955 until his death in 1963.
