Description
Albert ANDRE (1869–1954) Laudun (Gard), summer 1929 Oil on canvas, signed lower left, located and dated on the reverse. Inscription on the stretcher: Dr Vian 109 (?) 61 x 70 cm Albert André began his training alongside the Nabis, before very quickly moving on to study under Albert Marquet and Paul Signac. He thus moved in the circles of the avant-garde of late 19th-century painting. But it was above all Auguste Renoir, his elder, with whom he formed a close friendship, who influenced his style. From 1917 until his death in 1954, he served as curator of the Musée de Bagnols-sur-Cèze – now the Musée Albert-André – near Laudun, where he had retired. Thanks to him, this museum became a leading centre for the history of modern painting, particularly Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art.
