Vladimir Mayakovsky (1893–1930) was one of the most important figures of early 20th-century Russian Futurism. *The Cloud in Trousers*, a work written between 1914 and 1915, encapsulates his desire to overturn his country’s social and traditional order. This work, which straddles the line between poetry and reality, inspired Fanti’s thinking; through his use of colour, he imbues a melancholic image drawn from Romanticism with a ‘kitsch’ dimension that forms part of the new artistic visions of Italian artists in the late 1970s.
