Raymond Léon RIVOIRE, a renowned French sculptor of the Art Deco movement, exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1905. He was awarded a silver medal there in 1921 and a gold medal in 1929. The creator of numerous commissioned works in France and abroad, he also produced a sculpture of Neptune for the ocean liner Normandie.
This sculpture of an athlete appears to be unpublished in the documented catalogue of his works. Nevertheless, it is known that he took part in the official competition for the 1924 Paris Olympic Games in the ‘sculpture’ category. On that occasion, he is said to have presented a javelin thrower during the artistic competitions at the Grand Palais.
