Description
MENDE, SIERRA LEONE.
Bundu Sowei helmet mask made of wood with a deep black patina. Used in initiation ceremonies for young girls by the Sande Society. It bears the characteristic features, namely the ringed neck (rolls of fat) and a high forehead, which frame small, half-closed eyes and a small, closed mouth. Numerous marks, scratches and signs of wear on both the surface and the interior. These bear witness to long-term ritual use and considerable age.
Early 20th century.
