Description
Makonde mask, Tanzania, wood, raffia, H.27cmxW.18cm. The Makonde make two types of mask, each reflecting different carving traditions: mask-helmets made mainly by groups based in Mozambique, and face masks made mainly by the Makonde based in Tanzania. The anthropomorphic face masks sometimes have the appearance of a portrait, or depict a forthcoming illness. More realistic examples are rare: more often than not, a schematic representation dominates these works.
