Description
Kota reliquary figure, Gabon, wood, copper, H.44cmxW.22cm. Provenance: former collection, Normandy, acquired in situ in the 1960s, passed on by descent. These sculptures surmounting the wicker baskets containing the relics were intended to guard the bones of the ancestors. On the occasion of major clan ceremonies (bwett, mbulu-ngulu or mboy) attended only by the initiated, the guardians and reliquaries were brought out into the open so that the ancestors could participate in the important decisions to be taken by the clan members after their death.
