Description
After Paul Jouve (French, 1878–1973) André Maillart (French, 1886–1951) Macedonian Buffalo, c. 1920 Copper engraving. Titled and inscribed ‘Macedonian Buffalo, Thessaloniki’. Height 55, width 100 cm. Having been demobilised from the Army of the Orient, Jouve returned to his studio where, around 1920, he painted a canvas depicting a “Team of Macedonian Buffaloes” (private collection), based on sketches he had made in 1917. It was André Maillart, winner of the Prix de Rome, who engraved for Jouve at that time. This large etching was printed in an edition of just 50 copies, two of which feature a mosaic gold background. We would like to thank Mr Dominique Suisse, the artist’s beneficiary, for his clarification, noting that no print rights are associated with this copperplate.
