A RARE BLACK-GROUND 'TRUMPETER' DISH
Qianlong period, ca. 1745
Painted to the centre with two musicians standing on a grassy patch, one wearing a yellow tunic and blowing a horn, the other clad in a light green tunic blowing a trumpet, all reserved on a lustrous, deep black enamel ground, with a border of gilt spearheads around the rim.
23 cm (9 in.) diam.
清乾隆 約1745年 墨地樂人圖盤
This rare dish with its Middle Eastern trumpeters wearing native Indian headdresses belongs to a small group of porcelains of the same distinctive pattern, made after a design attributed to Cornelis Pronk (1691-1754). The design appears on a variety of vessels including ewers, teapots, saucers, bowls and dishes such as the present example, as a group in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London illustrates (accession no. C.88&A-1963), suggesting that they were made for at least one specially commissioned set.
