229. * A CELADON AND RUST JADE BRUSH HOLDER Ming dynasty (1368-1644) A PALE CELADON GREEN JADE 'PRUNUS' WASHER Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) Carved in the shape of an open prunus flower nestled among branches issuing multiple smaller flowers, forming the handle and foot, the stone a pale celadon colour with russet splashes, wood stand. 9.7 cm (3 7/8 in) wide (2). Provenance: According to family history, which is supported by family records illustrating the progress of British troops in Beijing at the time, this object was acquired by a military attaché posted to Beijing at the time of the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. He was attached to the staff of Brigadier-General A. Gaselee, the commander of the British contingent assisting in suppressing the Boxer Rebellion on behalf of the Imperial Court, as one of the Eight Allied Powers. 明 青白玉梅花洗 來源 據家族傳述及保存文獻記載,此拍品為一名於1900年義和團運動期間駐北京之英國軍事隨員所得。該隨員隸屬於 Alfred Gaselee 准將麾下。Gaselee 准將為英國部隊指揮官,率領英軍作為八國聯軍之一參與鎮壓行動。 Compare with a jade cup in the shape of a flower similarly carved with openwork branches, dated to the 16th century, in the collection of the British Museum, London, accession number 1930.12-17.12.
